The Preliminary Year 11 English courses introduce students to the key concepts required for the study of Higher School Certificate English. At Stage 6, students are more specific and articulate in their study of how meanings are shaped in and through texts. Students extend their skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and representing by refining their imaginative and interpretive skills and by applying their analytical abilities to increasingly complex texts.
Standard
This Standard course is designed for students to increase their expertise in English. The students learn to respond to and compose a wide variety of texts in a range of situations in order to be effective, creative and confident communicators.
The Standard course begins with an Area of Study module. This unit introduces students to a conceptual exploration through a variety of texts. Students then undertake the study of two modules in which they engage with a wide variety of text types including Poetry and film. The modules mirror the content and requirements of the HSC course.
Advanced
The Advanced course is designed for students to undertake the challenge of higher order thinking. These students apply critical and creative skills in their composition of and response to texts in order to develop their academic achievement through understanding the nature and function of complex texts.
The Advanced course begins with an Area of Study module. This unit introduces the students to a conceptual exploration through a variety of texts. Students then undertake the study of two modules in which they engage with a comparative study of texts and a critical study. They study and engage with texts such as film and Shakespeare.
Extension 1
Extension 1 English offers the most talented and motivated English students an opportunity to develop their skills in subject English to an exemplary level. An academically challenging and stimulating course, Extension English facilitates the refinement of analytical, critical and creative writing skills through the close and contextualised study of a wide range of traditional and contemporary texts, covering topic areas such as Gothic fiction, Crime fiction, post-World War 2 literature, Speculative Fiction and Postmodernism. Specifically, students learn to understand the way social, cultural and historical contexts shape the composition, reception, study and evaluation of literature. As such, Extension English prepares students with the skills required for success in the humanities at a tertiary level of study.
