English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Students learn about the English language through written, spoken and visual texts of increasing complexity as they progress through their schooling.

An understanding of the English language is central to how we communicate and essential for intellectual, social and emotional development.

The study of English should develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging and enjoyable. It develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.

In Year 11 and 12, the study of English is mandatory. Courses offered include:

  • English Advanced
  • English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D)
  • English Extension 1
  • English Extension 2
  • English Standard
  • English Studies.

Faculty Overview

The study of English is central to the learning and development of students, and is the only mandatory subject for Years 7-12; reflecting its importance in developing students' skills and knowledge across all key learning areas. The English Faculty at Moorebank High School aim to enable students to take their place as confident communicators, critical and imaginative thinkers, lifelong learners and active participants in society.

Our faculty members have diverse experiences and areas of expertise in English. We are a highly experienced, motivated and dynamic team who work together to engage and maximise the involvement and development of our students. Our effective teaching and learning practices ensure that all students are encouraged to achieve their personal best. This is reflected in our consistently sounds results in the Higher School Certificate and NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy And Numeracy) tests.

Our programs derive from the current English syllabus and we endeavour to make English both a challenging and enjoyable subject. We ensure that texts that have been selected are appropriate to students' needs, interests and abilities. It is through the study of English that studentsunderstand, value and appreciate how language shapes our understanding of ourselves and our world, and how it is the primary means by which we relate to others.

Our students are also offered the opportunity to participate in enrichment activities such as debating and public speaking competitions.
